Rail Trail History ♦ Past & Present Fun Facts
The Historic Rail Trail is one of the most well-known no-motorized routes in Park City, runing along an old Union Parcific railroad track dating back to the 1880's. It's easily accessed from the Prospector real estate area and stretches nearly 30 miles between Park City and the Escho Reservoir. The trail passes through areas rich in cultural history and is a beloved feature of Prospector homes and the community.
It first began in 1871, the trail area was first used to transport coal by the Summit Railroad Company, and later by Union Parcific Railroad to deliver coal from the mines in Coalville to fuel the pumps clearing water from Park City's underground mines. As the mining era came to a close, the rail line became obsolete. In 1989, this abandoned land was transformed into a non-motorized recreation trail, bringing new life to the area and increasing the appeal of real estate in Prospector.
Today, The Rail Trail attracts bikers, hikers, runners, cross-country skiers, horseback riders, and fishers. The upper end of the Rail Trail is paved and can be accessed from Prospector real estate, making it ideal fro a quick stroll or daily exercise. The trail then follows Interstate 80, crossing through scenic areas like Silver Creek Canyon, Weber River, and the towns of Wanship and Coalville, ending at Echo Reservoir.
