Discover the Rail Trail in Prospector Park City
The Historic Rail Trail, possibly Park City’s most well known non-motorized route, runs along an Old Union Pacific railroad track that dates back to the 1880s and is easily accessed from the Prospector area. It is nearly 30 miles long, and stretches between Park City and the Echo Reservoir. The trail crosses areas rich in cultural history. It first began in 1871 and for the next two decades the trail area went through several transitions from moving coal as the Summit County Railroad Company to Union Pacific Railroad for transporting coal from mines in Coalville to Park City to fuel the pumps clearing water from the underground mines. As the mining era faded, the line was no longer needed. In 1989, collaboration began to transform this abandoned real estate into a non-motorized recreation trail.Today, the Rail Trail welcomes bikers, hikers, runners, cross-country skiers, horseback riders, and fishers.

The upper end of the Rail Trail can be accessed from Park City and this first portion of the trail passing through Prospector real estate areas is paved with asphalt and is perfect for a quick pleasure stroll. The Rail Trail from Park City then follows Interstate 80 across Silver Creek Canyon, then goes along the Weber River through the towns of Wanship and Coalville. Elevation along the trail varies from 5,280 feet to 6,900 feet, and a total of 450 acres and ends at the Echo Reservoir.
