Spectacular Vision ♦ The History Behind Lower Deer Valley Real Estate
Did you know that what we now call Lower Deer Valley, home to some of the most sought-after luxury ski homes in Park City, once had a humble rope tow as far back as 1929? Back then, the idea of Deer Valley Resort real estate might have only existed in the minds of a few visionaries. The first official ski events in the area took place in February 1936, during the “Park City Winter Carnival,” held on a snowy, north-facing hillside at the head of Deer Valley.
Through the support of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the area was outfitted with ski trails, toboggan slides, slalom courses, ski-jump takeoffs, and shelter cabins. In 1946, two local residents assembled what would become Utah’s first mechanized ski lift using homemade wooden towers and surplus mining equipment. As Carpenter famously recalled in 1986, “That lift was made out of pine poles that we cut when we cleared the area—we built the wheels and we bought a big Hercules truck engine that sat upon the top.” It was called the Snow Park Ski Area, and it's fascinating to imagine what homes for sale in Deer Valley might have cost back then!
Fast forward to 1981, when visionary developer Edgar Stern founded Deer Valley Resort and expanded the area above Snow Park. Opening with only one double and four triple chairlifts, the resort quickly grew into one of the most iconic ski destinations in the world. Today, Lower Deer Valley homes offer unparalleled access to world-class skiing, all within minutes of historic Main Street in Park City.
In August 2017, Deer Valley® Resort became part of the Alterra Mountain Company, adding even more prestige to the area. Known for its ski valets, complimentary parking-lot shuttles, and first-of-its-kind licensed childcare, Deer Valley real estate offers not just beautiful homes, but a lifestyle unlike any other. During the 2002 Winter Olympics, Deer Valley hosted freestyle moguls, aerials, and alpine slalom events, drawing nearly 100,000 spectators. These Olympic roots are a badge of honor for the community—and a point of pride for those who call Deer Valley home.
