Coming Home to Heber History ♦ Past & Present

Real Estate & The Historical Railroad
In the summer of 1857, workers from a sawmill hiked to the summit of the Wasatch Range and viewed a high mountain valley to the southeast. In 1858, a group of cattlemen left Provo driving their herds up the canyon and established ranches in the south end of the valley. A pioneer party consisting primarily of LDS converts from Great Britain arrived on May 2, 1959. In 1862 Wasatch County was created and the London townsite was renamed Heber City. Settlers built their homes closely together to form a fort for protection from Native Americans. In 1889 Heber City incorporates as a township, and in September 1899, the Rio Grande Western Railroad completed a connection from Provo to Heber City. After being abandoned in the late 1960s, the line is saved for tourist rides. During the 1970s and 1980s, the railroad operated as the "Heber Creeper." Presently the railroad operates as a non-profit organization called the Heber Valley Railroad and operates passenger excursion rides.
