History of Upper Deer Valley ♦ Past & Present
Upper Deer Valley, known as Silver Lake, used to be called Lake Flats, which was Park City's first mining settlement. The natural lake that once existed here was inadvertently drained by a mining tunnel, but its legacy lives on in the name Silver Lake.
Before Deer Valley® Resort became the luxury ski destination it is today, the area was home to Snow Park Ski Area, which opened in 1947 and operated until 1965. Park City locals Bob Burns and Otto Carpenter founded Snow Park as a ski mecca, laying the groundwork for the region’s future. Today, the Burns and Carpenter Express lifts at the base of Bald Eagle Mountain honor these early pioneers.
When Deer Valley® Resort opened on December 26, 1981, its founders would provide a service-oriented skiing experience and quality not available at other ski resorts of the time. They wanted to build a destination ski resort that would operate with a first-class hotel's conveniences, services, and amenities. The resort launched with five lifts, 35 trails, and two day lodges: Snow Park Lodge at the base and Silver Lake Lodge mid-mountain.
"The recent addition of Deer Valley East Village, a transformative expansion on the resort’s eastern side, marks a new era for the area. Deer Valley continues to honor its roots, while looking boldly toward the future!
