Midway Name & Swiss Days ♦ Fun History
Where did the town get its name? A wagon road completed through Provo Canyon in 1858 brought the first settlers to the area. In the spring of 1859, more families began moving west along Snake Creek. The settlers established two small communities, and Indian hostilities grew in 1966. The settlers agreed to build a fort halfway or midway between the two existing communities, thus beginning our modern-day town named Midway. In the 1860s and 1870s, a large number of Swiss families arrived for the Swiss heritage that Midway still claims. Midway was incorporated in June of 1891. Midway Swiss Days brings thousands of people to the town. The event started in 1947 through the efforts of Luke's Hot Pots Resort owners, the Erwins. It was initially called Harvest Days; the idea of a Swiss theme was later created to attract larger crowds to Midway. Although agriculture is still found in Midway, recreation has become an essential aspect of Heber Valley & Midway. Come play in Midway!
