A Look Back at The Canyons History ♦ Past & Present
Today’s Canyons Village real estate is known for luxury ski-in/ski-out homes, world-class hotels, and elevated mountain living—but this scenic corner of Park City has a humble and fascinating past. Over 200 years ago, the area was part of the migratory routes and hunting grounds of the Ute tribes. By the mid-to-late 1800s, settlers arrived, drawn by the promise of mining, agriculture, and the use of open lands for seasonal sheep grazing.
One of the most remarkable evolutions happened in what is now The Colony at White Pine Canyon. Before becoming one of the most exclusive gated communities in the country, the area was a working sheep ranch. Developers later recognized its natural beauty and potential, carefully preserving open space and alpine meadows while designing private ski-in/ski-out estates. Today, homes for sale in The Colony at White Pine Canyon are among the largest and most luxurious ski properties in North America, offering direct access to Park City’s world-class slopes.
The broader Canyons base area has also seen several transformations. Originally opened as Park City West in 1968, it became ParkWest in 1975 after a change in ownership, and was briefly renamed Wolf Mountain in 1995. In 1997, it was rebranded as The Canyons under the American Skiing Company, which was later dissolved in 2007. Talisker Corporation purchased the resort in 2008, investing heavily in upgrades and renaming it Canyons Resort in 2010. Just a few years later, Vail Resorts took over operations under a 50-year lease, and in 2014, after acquiring Park City Mountain Resort, the two were merged. Today, the area is known as Canyons Village at Park City, part of the largest lift-served ski resort in the United States.
